Hot Weather Style, Neo-Vintage Watches & ChatGPT Hacks for Busy Dads | Well Spent

Plus, my favorite Instagram account for #fitspo right now...

🌟 It’s Been a While…

You haven’t heard from me in ages. Totally my fault! I’m excited to reconnect, but if you’d rather not, please unsubscribe with the link at the bottom (no hard feelings).

🙋🏻‍♂️ To re-introduce myself, I’m Brock McGoff, former proprietor of TheModestMan.com and TheSlenderWrist.com. These days, I’m just a lowly YouTuber.

This newsletter is all about spending your money and time in ways that genuinely increase fulfillment. I like to think about it as “thoughtful consumerism”. We all need stuff — clothes, wallets, cars, light bulbs. We want things too — a new watch, a cleaner house, better underwear.

I’m here to show you what’s worth buying and what isn’t, from the perspective of a 40-year-old dad who hasn’t given up on personal style, fitness and healthy relationships.

Can you relate? Hit ‘reply’ and tell me a bit about yourself. I read every email. Or, just keep an eye out for next week’s issue. Thanks for being here 🤝

🩳 My Summer Uniform

It’s stupid hot where I live. Like 100+ every day. I’m living in shorts, t-shirts and either sneakers or sandals.

Yeah, I have polos and camp collar shirts for date nights, etc. But my daily uniform is super casual, comfy and cool.

Here are 12 examples from the past 2 weeks.

⌚️ Wrist Check

I recently sold off a few watches that weren’t getting any wrist time.

With some spare cash and a few empty slots in my watch box, I started browsing on Chrono24 (great app btw).

When I came across the neo-vintage Oris BC3 7501, it was sort of love and first sight. The highly legible typeface, the day-date complication, the compact 35mm size, the OEM rubber strap with an actual metal clasp…

The Oris 7501 BC3 (this is the 35mm, not the 40mm version)

I found one in near mint condition from a Japanese dealer on eBay. Full kit, shipped for less than $700 all in.

Rubber strap + deployant clasp = 🤌🏼

It got me thinking a lot about the neo-vintage market, especially for entry level luxury brands like Longines and Oris.

Modified ETA 2835-2 automatic movement

There are some absolute gems out there, many of which have more personality than what you’ll find at an AD these days.

Tip: Phone cameras make watches look way bigger! Use a mirror for a more realistic size check.

I highly recommend downloading the Chrono24 app for virtual window shopping. Beats scrolling on Instagram any day of the week!

👨🏻‍💻 ChatGPT Hack for Dads

This is probably the best use of AI I’ve discovered so far…

Want to totally nail bedtime with your toddler? Have ChatGPT write custom bedtime stories based on their interests (and how much time you have):

You can get the next part of the story anytime you want.

We’re on part 8 now. New characters have been introduced, and we’ve made our way into The Little Mermaid universe 🧜‍♀️

My daughter can’t get enough, and I’m totally winning bedtime.

Thanks, robots!

In Case You Missed It 👀

Here are my most recent videos:

I’m working on an updated EDC video, another comfy shoe roundup, and Home Upgrades Part 2.

Stay tuned!

🤳🏼 Who I’m Following

I really love this guy’s personal style.

It’s relaxed, casual, comfy. He’ll suit up occasionally, but he mostly wears jeans, overshirts and baseball caps.

I’ve been dressing more casually in recent years, prioritizing comfort and movement over “fashion”.

And I get a lot of inspo from Billy’s posts. Go give him a follow!

Did You Know? That Oris watch I bought appeared on Alan Grant’s wrist in Jurassic Park 3. It’s a pretty random choice, if you ask me. I guess the costume designer was a fan of the brand 🤷🏻‍♂️

Until next time,

Brock
